Stories Without Pictures began with a simple question: What happens when children experience stories without visual distractions?

Together, we set out to create an immersive audio storytelling platform where carefully crafted narratives and rich soundscapes encourage children to imagine characters, places, and adventures for themselves. While my co-founder, Nidhi, writes and narrates many of the stories, the platform has always been a collaborative effort—from shaping new initiatives and designing the user experience to producing, publishing, and continuously evolving the ecosystem.

Overview

Stories Without Pictures is an independent storytelling platform that creates original audio experiences for children. Available across major podcast platforms, it combines storytelling, sound design, and educational themes to encourage imagination, curiosity, and a lifelong love for listening.

Rather than relying on animation or illustrations, the platform invites children to become active participants, constructing their own mental imagery as stories unfold through narration, music, and sound.

As co-founder, I have been involved in building both the platform and the systems that support it, helping shape its identity, user experience, production workflow, and long-term direction.

Context

Children today consume stories through increasingly visual mediums, where imagination is often guided—or constrained—by what appears on a screen.

Stories Without Pictures explores a different approach. By removing visual cues, every listener creates their own interpretation of the story, making the experience deeply personal and imaginative.

Since its launch, the platform has expanded beyond standalone stories to include new initiatives exploring nature, science, conservation, and current affairs for children, while remaining grounded in the same philosophy of curiosity-led learning through audio.

Building and sustaining such a platform required more than producing individual episodes. It required designing an ecosystem that could support storytelling, discovery, publishing, audience engagement, and future growth.

Challenge

Creating an engaging experience without visuals fundamentally changes the role of design.

Every episode needed to maintain attention, communicate emotion, and stimulate imagination using only narrative, voice, pacing, music, and sound. At the same time, the platform itself required a cohesive digital presence that could help parents discover stories, understand the concept, and access content across multiple podcast platforms.

Behind the scenes, production also demanded a repeatable workflow for editing, cleaning, mixing, publishing, and promoting episodes while supporting the platform’s continued evolution.

Approach

As a collaborative venture, we developed Stories Without Pictures by combining complementary strengths.

While Nidhi led much of the storytelling and narration, I focused on designing the broader user experience around the stories. This included creating the website, producing visual communication, editing and mastering audio, publishing episodes, and helping define the systems and processes that enable the platform to grow.

Together, we continue to shape new initiatives, refine the platform’s direction, and make strategic decisions about its future.

Process

My work spans multiple aspects of the platform, including:

  • Designing and maintaining the Stories Without Pictures website.
  • Creating visual communication for digital and social media.
  • Editing, cleaning, mixing, and mastering recorded audio.
  • Publishing episodes across major podcast platforms.
  • Producing original stories and contributing to creative development.
  • Designing workflows that streamline production and publishing.
  • Collaborating on new initiatives, audience engagement, and long-term platform strategy.

Working across both creative and technical domains has helped establish a production process that supports consistent quality while allowing the platform to evolve organically.

Key Decisions

Throughout the project, I focused on building systems rather than isolated deliverables.

Some of the key design principles included:

  • Creating a simple, accessible website that supports discovery rather than distracting from the stories.
  • Maintaining a consistent visual identity across digital touchpoints.
  • Designing efficient production and publishing workflows.
  • Ensuring audio quality remained central to the listening experience.
  • Building an ecosystem capable of supporting new storytelling formats and initiatives over time.

Outcome

Stories Without Pictures has grown into a multi-platform audio storytelling initiative available on major podcast services, offering children and families an alternative way to experience stories through imagination rather than screens.

The platform continues to evolve through new programmes, original stories, and collaborative initiatives, supported by an integrated production and publishing workflow that enables regular, high-quality content.

Reflection

Building Stories Without Pictures has been unlike any client project because it combines product thinking, storytelling, communication design, audio production, and long-term strategy within a single ecosystem.

What began as an idea for children’s audio stories has become an ongoing exploration of how thoughtful design can shape not only individual experiences but also the systems that sustain them. Working across creative, technical, and operational roles has reinforced my belief that meaningful experiences emerge when content, technology, and design evolve together—not as separate disciplines, but as parts of the same story.
